pink tulips

I was lucky enough to get some beautiful pink tulips yesterday because I am sick with an awful head cold. I have just been lounging around the house doing watching tv or sleeping because I am so knocked out by it, but I felt good enough to make a half hour sketch of my flowers this morning. I did it in colored pencil—it has been a long time since I have done anything in colored pencil. Sometimes I dislike colored pencil because all the burnishing can be tedious and hard on the wrist, but I really like to use them as sketching pencils, especially the browns.

I have been trying recently to do my drawing without the benefit of an eraser just as an added challenge. Lately I’ve been feeling discouraged that I’m not improving fast enough so I’m trying to add new levels of difficulty all the time. Unfortunately the scan does not show much detail at all, but I’m pretty happy with this sketch overall.

OH I THINK THE TULIPS are INCREDIBLE! Love all the delicate shading you’ve done! And to do this when you’re SICK??? Mercy! BEAUTIFUL flowers …. and a wish for your returned good health!

You should be happy with this tulip drawing—well done! You captured the shape of them nicely, as well as the thick shiny texture of the petals.

Oh it’s a beautiful drawing Carolyn. The tulips are gorgeous and you did a great job with the shading. I love coloured pencil because the finished effect is so subtle. :o)

Amazing job, there… I do hope you realize how incredibly talented you are. I’m sorry to hear about your cold, though. Get well soon! :)

Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place. ~Susan Sontag, Illness as Metaphor, 1977
I hope you feel better in no time – take care!
