planting my roots in the leaf industry
Everyday Matters Challenge #34 is to draw a leaf. I think the idea is to draw fall leaves but the leaves haven’t really turned yet, or at least not in Massachusetts. (I have a feeling that the leaves will not be too spectacular this year anyway.) Instead I have drawn the leaves of some houseplants: begonia, calla lily, cactus, and something else that I can’t recognize. These are quick sketches and I did not use my blending stump to make everything nice and smooth. I wish I had my colored pencils or watercolors with me right now because I know it would have come out really nice. I do not feel bad for only doing quick sketches though because it is far better than doing nothing. I am a very busy person right now.
I also changed the look of my blog. I wanted something that had less bright colors and was more simple. I like the white for now as it is more “gallery-like.” What do you think?

Carolyn, you did a wonderful job with your pencils. Can’t wait to see your leaves when they turn in your area.
Your white is like a palette—now you can fill it up with color!
The layout is nice and simple so the focus is on your drawings. Just a little colour would make it zing I think! (That’s rich coming from me!)
I haven’t been sketching for over a year, so yes, even those quick sketchs are worthwhile. Well done!
Rats, and I thought that the leaves would be turning everywhere by now. I saw a photo taken this week in Manhattan and they were rust colored ... hmmm.
Well, the best laid plans and all. At any rate I think your leaves are beautiful, very sensitively drawn and you’ll just have to do some more for us when the colors come in, OK?
Sure thing Karen.
Carolyn—beautifully done leaves! Our leaves haven’t really started to change much here, yet, either, so I’m going to imitate your good plan of doing fall leaves later on. I really like the white look on your blog—maybe a border around the pictures would make it pop a tiny bit more? I’m thinking about doing the same thing with mine, and its nice to have other people do the testing … (grin)
More lovely leaves… and yes, I changed my blog background to white also. It is less busy. I like the way you have set your blog up with different categories. I use blogger, and I guess I should try to host my own place so I can do more individual type programming. Oh well… no time to learn all that now.
when i first went to the picture, i was expecting you or one of the commentors to say it was a green man picture. i swear it is a face!
i like your work very much. i don’t draw, but i would like to. i guess the only thing for it is to DO it.
